Episode 1: Welcome to the New Zealand Franchising Podcast
Helping New Zealand business owners, franchisors, franchisees, and aspiring entrepreneurs better understand the world of franchising.
For more than 20 years, I’ve worked with franchisors, franchisees, and business owners throughout New Zealand, helping them develop, grow, and strengthen franchise systems.
During that time, I’ve noticed one consistent theme: franchising is often misunderstood.
Most New Zealanders interact with franchise businesses every day. They buy products from them, use their services, work for them, and many aspire to own one. Yet relatively few people understand the important role franchising plays in New Zealand’s economy or how franchise systems actually operate.
That’s why I created the New Zealand Franchising Podcast.
My goal is simple: to help people better understand franchising and share practical ideas, insights, and experiences that contribute to stronger franchise systems throughout New Zealand.
The Importance of Franchising in New Zealand
Franchising is one of New Zealand’s largest and most successful business sectors.
According to the latest Survey of Franchising in New Zealand, conducted by Massey University:
- Approximately 546 franchise systems operate across New Zealand.
- They comprise around 27,000 franchise units.
- They employ more than 114,000 people.
- The sector contributes an estimated 11% of New Zealand’s GDP.
These are impressive numbers, but they tell only part of the story.
Franchise businesses operate in almost every community and across virtually every industry.
Franchising Is Much More Than Fast Food
When many people hear the word franchise, they immediately think of fast-food restaurants or coffee chains.
In reality, franchising spans an enormous range of industries, including:
- Automotive services
- Building and trades
- Home services
- Education and tutoring
- Health and fitness
- Professional services
- Retail
- Property services
- Cleaning
- Hospitality
- Business services
Whether you’re servicing your car, hiring a tradesperson, attending a gym, or using a professional adviser, you’re likely dealing with a franchise business.
What Is Franchising?
At its simplest, franchising is a business partnership.
A franchisor develops:
- A proven business model
- A recognised brand
- Operating systems
- Marketing programmes
- Training
- Ongoing support
- Continuous innovation
A franchisee invests in the opportunity and operates their own business using that established system.
The relationship is governed by a franchise agreement, which defines the rights and responsibilities of both parties.
When the partnership works well:
- The franchisor grows the brand.
- Franchisees build profitable businesses.
- Customers receive a consistent, high-quality experience.
- Everyone benefits.
Successful Franchise Systems Start with Successful Franchisees
One principle you’ll hear repeatedly throughout this podcast is this:
- Strong franchise systems are built on successful franchisees.
- When franchisees are profitable, engaged, and committed, the entire network becomes stronger.
- One of franchising’s greatest strengths is that it combines:
- Local business ownership
- Entrepreneurial motivation
- Proven systems
- National brand recognition
- Ongoing support
- Shared knowledge and innovation
This combination creates outcomes that independent businesses often find difficult to achieve alone.
