No doubt like me, you will have people close (or may be very close to you) that have been tested and are now self-isolating. We wish you all the best for the coming days and weeks. What a nightmare we find the country and our businesses in. At the time of writing we have 277 COVID-19 cases, growing by circa 30%-40% in each of the last two days. With COVID-19 locations of interest also increasing it seems conceivable cases could reach / surpass one modeler’s upper estimates of 1000 COVID-19 cases. That, combined with the need to stamp out this nasty COVID-19 Delta variant must mean we need to plan for a super long lockdown – especially in Auckland. As reported by another COVID-19 cases modeler of the virus “it’s likely an alert level 3 lockdown would not be enough to contain a Delta outbreak.”
All of this means that we need to be realistic about the likely length and types (e.g., lockdown levels, staff absence due to isolating etc) of interruption to our businesses – and factor this into our planning and decision-making now. Early planning is especially important for franchisors, as time is like gold when it comes to the need to implement tough decisions / changes. Already, of course, many franchisors have updated and implemented ‘playbooks’ from the previous lockdowns – and are already demonstrating the types of incredible support FANZ members would have seen demonstrated during all previous FANZ PAFAT (Positive Actions Franchisors Are Taking) Webinars.
A reminder of some important COVID-19 information sources during this time:
- The official COVID-19 website
- Current Locations of Interest
- Alert Level 4 Guidance
- COVID-19 site pertaining to businesses
- COVID-19 financial support for businesses
- COVID-19 financial support tool
- IRD – Resurgence Support Payments
- Work & Income – COVID-19 Wage Subsidy
- Work & Income – COVID-19 Leave Support Scheme
- MBIE – Specific guidance for businesses at alert levels
- Ministry of Health – Public health guidelines for businesses and services
- Ministry of Health – COVID-19 Mental health and wellbeing resources
We also recommend strong contingency planning during this time.
In particular, what would it mean for you and your franchisees (in terms of the situation and your best ideal actions) if X, Y or Z transpired.
Also, regarding any of the above financial support programmes for business, do make sure a) you understand your entitlements, b) only apply for those that make most practicable sense, and c) you dot your i’s and t’s. Related, we strongly suggest you get specific accounting and legal advice as needed – to ensure you’re doing the right thing for your business. Please reach out if you think we can help in anyway. Kind regards, Callum Floyd.
