Conducted by Massey and Griffith Universities on behalf of the Franchise Association of New Zealand.
Franchising New Zealand 2017 Survey
New Zealand franchising needs up to date information, particularly the quantification of franchising\’s total size and contribution. This information is especially valuable when explaining franchising\’s importance and value to key stakeholders, including government. The information is also helpful for franchisors, franchisees and service providers to not only help explain franchising to others, but also better understand the area we all work in.
The results, when compared to the previous survey in 2012, were especially interesting. Perhaps most interesting, and surprising, was the level of growth over the last five years.
Key growth examples include:
- The number of franchise systems growing 41% from 446 to 631.
- The number of franchise units growing 65% from 22,400 to 37,000.
- The total workforce involved in New Zealand franchising growing 22% to over 120,000. This included a solid 34% increase in the number of full-time employed staff to 74,300.
- The turnover of Business Format Franchising (excluding Vehicle and Fuel Retail) increasing 87% from an estimated $15 to $28 billion.
It was also pleasing to see reported levels of disputation remain at steady levels, and comparing well internationally. It was also pleasing to quantify, for the first time, the level of training provided by franchising companies, both to new and existing 1) franchisees and 2) employees.
