Learn the 3 Principles for Sustainable Franchising
Sustainable franchising starts with getting the franchise structure right from the very beginning. The initial franchising assessment and the establishment phase is fundamental.
Any errors or missteps in the early stages can lead to major problems down the road. Franchising is a complex model, and the franchise structure needs to be carefully designed to fit the unique needs of the business.
Establishing the Right Franchise Structure
There are many elements that go into establishing the optimal franchise structure, and it’s crucial to work with experienced franchise consultants and specialists to get it right. Some of the key considerations include:
- Business Model Fit: Franchising may not be the right growth strategy for every business. The franchisor needs to carefully assess whether their business model, products/services, and growth plans are a good match for the franchise model.
- Unit Economics: The franchise unit economics must work for both the franchisor and the franchisee. This includes factors like startup costs, ongoing fees, profit margins, and return on investment.
- Franchise Agreement: The franchise agreement is a legally binding contract that defines the relationship between the franchisor and franchisee. It needs to be carefully structured to protect the brand and system, while also providing the right incentives and support for franchisees.
- Intellectual Property: The franchisor’s trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and other intellectual property need to be properly secured and licensed to franchisees.
- Operations Manual: A comprehensive operations manual is essential to ensure consistency across the franchise system and provide franchisees with the guidance they need to successfully run their businesses.
- Supply Chain: The franchise supply chain must be optimized to provide franchisees with the right products, services, and support at the right prices.
Getting the franchise structure right from the start is critical for long-term sustainability. It lays the foundation for a healthy, well-functioning franchise system that can withstand the test of time.
Engaging the Right People
Sustainable franchising also requires engaging the right people – both within the franchisor organization and among the franchisee network. The key issues are then maintaining a focus on profile of successful franchisees, processes for franchisee selection, franchising onboarding and capability development in franchising management on an ongoing basis.
Franchisee selection is one of the most important decisions a franchisor will make. Choosing the right franchisees can make or break a franchise system. Franchisors need to have a clear, well-defined franchisee profile that outlines the ideal characteristics, skills, and experience they are looking for. This profile should then guide a rigorous franchisee screening and selection process.
But franchisee selection is just the start. Onboarding and ongoing support for franchisees is also critical. Franchisors need to provide comprehensive training, both initial and ongoing, to ensure franchisees have the knowledge and skills to successfully operate their businesses. They also need to offer field support, regional/national conferences, franchise advisory councils, and other forums to foster collaboration, share best practices, and address any issues or challenges that arise.
At the same time, the franchisor organization itself needs to have the right people in place – from the C-suite to the franchise support team. Franchise leadership must have a deep understanding of the franchise model and the ability to effectively manage the complex franchisor-franchisee relationship. They also need to foster a culture of support, empathy, and a “win-win” approach with franchisees.
Sustainable franchising is all about people – getting the right franchisees on board and then providing them with the support, training, and collaborative environment they need to thrive. It’s a people-centric endeavor that requires careful attention and ongoing management.
Effective Franchise Management and Governance
The third key principle for sustainable franchising is effective franchise management and governance. Maintaining the big picture can be difficult and the big picture can often be lost within the operational day-to-day challenges. That’s why it’s so important for franchise companies to have a strong governance framework in place.
At the heart of this governance framework are the franchise company’s board of directors. Boards of franchise companies are wise to continually focus on at least five key areas:
- Brand and System Integrity: Ensuring the franchise brand, systems, and processes are maintained with consistency and quality across the entire network.
- Franchisee Relationships: Overseeing the critical franchisor-franchisee relationship and ensuring it is managed effectively, with a focus on mutual success.
- Franchise Support and Development: Monitoring the effectiveness of the franchise support systems, training programs, and other resources provided to franchisees.
- System Growth and Performance: Reviewing the overall performance of the franchise system, including unit-level economics, new franchise sales, and system-wide growth.
- Compliance and Risk Management: Ensuring the franchise system operates in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations, and that appropriate risk management processes are in place.
Effective franchise management and governance requires a delicate balance. Franchisors need to provide franchisees with a significant degree of autonomy to run their local businesses. But they also need to maintain control over the brand, systems, and overall performance of the franchise network.
This is where the franchise board of directors plays a critical role. They provide strategic oversight and guidance to ensure the franchisor is making the right decisions to foster long-term sustainability – decisions that balance the needs and interests of both the franchisor and the franchisees.
Conclusion for Sustainable Franchising
Sustainable franchising doesn’t happen by accident. It requires a deliberate, multi-faceted approach that addresses the key principles outlined in this blog post:
- Establishing the Right Franchise Structure: Carefully designing the franchise model, agreement, and supporting systems to create a solid foundation for long-term success.
- Engaging the Right People: Selecting the ideal franchisees and providing them with the training, support, and collaborative environment they need to thrive.
- Effective Franchise Management and Governance: Maintaining strategic oversight and control to protect the brand and system integrity, while also fostering a “win-win” relationship with franchisees.
By focusing on these three principles, franchise companies can build healthy, sustainable franchise systems that deliver great outcomes for all stakeholders – franchisors, franchisees, employees, suppliers, and customers. It’s a holistic, people-centric approach that is essential for long-term franchise success.
