The 2024 Survey of New Zealand Franchising
We are proud to have once again sponsored the 2024 Survey of New Zealand Franchising, conducted by Massey University on behalf of the Franchise Association of New Zealand (FANZ). Beyond our sponsorship, we also provided additional support for this important research.
Professor Jonathan Elms and Dr. Simon Moore from Massey University have done an outstanding job with this survey, which offers deep insights into the structure, strategies, challenges, and opportunities within New Zealand’s franchising sector.
Our thanks also extend to other sponsors who helped make this survey happen, including Westpac, Nexia New Zealand, Stewart Germann Law, Iridium Partners, Laser Plumbing & Electrical, Exceed, Franchise New Zealand Media and FANZ.
The 2024 survey reveals several key findings about the growth and impact of franchising in New Zealand:
- Franchise Sector Turnover: The sector’s revenue has risen by $10.4 billion since the last survey in 2021, reaching an estimated $47.2 billion.
- Franchisors and Units: New Zealand is home to 546 business format franchisors, with 27,295 franchise units operating across the country.
- Employment: More than 114,300 people are employed directly in business format franchising.
- Community Engagement: Nearly 90% of franchises contribute to their communities through financial donations, sponsorships, and other means.
- Technology: The adoption of modern technologies, including artificial intelligence, is becoming essential, with 72% of respondents either using or planning to implement AI.
- Training: All respondents provide initial training for franchisees, with a median training period of 14 days.
- Diversity and Inclusion: Half of the respondents have adopted policies promoting diversity, equity, and inclusivity among both employees and franchisees.
- Regional Distribution: Auckland remains the most popular location for franchise support offices.
Spotlight on Services for Established Franchisors
Now is a great time to be considering work on your franchise system. We can help within anything from ad hoc advice through to a comprehensive full franchise system review. In the first instance, just make contact. We’ll be happy to take time to understand your objectives.
We recommend established franchisors conduct a survey of franchisee satisfaction every one to two years. This is valuable for the franchise relationship, network improvement, forward planning, conference preparations and any award entries. Let us know if you would like more information.
We have incredible experience and expertise working with already established franchisors to comprehensively review and improve franchise networks, including improving both franchisor and franchisee performance.
We enjoy working regularly with a number of emerging franchising companies to plan, reinvigorate and grow their franchise networks. Feel free to reach out to us if you are interested in how our input, insight and support on a regular, programmed basis could help you grow stronger stakeholder returns and value.

Responsible Franchising
We have an article in the latest edition of Franchise New Zealand magazine talking about the important International Franchise Association concept of ‘Responsible Franchising.’
In the article we point out how ‘Franchising Responsibly’ from the outset (i.e., what a company does to prepare to franchise their business) acts as a foundation to support all elements of Responsible Franchising.

Motorcycle News
It can’t be all work, all of the time. I used to think it could, but have learnt or found the need for balance. One way I find that balance is having an epic micro-trip to plan for and enjoy – even if 6 months out. Last weekend was one of those, where I met with buddies from Tauranga, Blenheim and Wellington at Cape Palliser – on the exposed South Wairarapa Coast. We camped at the Waimeha Camping Village, which has a stadium like view out toward Kaikoura on the South Island.
The weather held, and we were treated with the wonderful purple lights of the Aurora Australis.
